BIBLE PASSAGE

ROMANS CHAPTER 12

A Living Sacrifice

1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Gifts of Grace

3 For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. 4 For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, 5 so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. 6 Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; 7 if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; 8 the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.

Marks of the True Christian

9 Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. 10 Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. 11 Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. 12 Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. 13 Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.

14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. 17 Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. 19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” 20 To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

SYNOPSIS

Romans 12 marks a transition in Paul's letter from doctrinal discussion to practical application, emphasizing how Christians should live in response to God's mercy. The chapter outlines a pattern for transformative living that goes against societal norms, urging believers to offer themselves as "living sacrifices" to God. This involves surrendering both inner and outer selves to God's control, resisting worldly pressures, and renewing one's mind to align with God's thoughts. Paul emphasizes the importance of honest self-evaluation, neither overestimating nor underestimating oneself. The chapter also discusses the concept of spiritual gifts, encouraging believers to identify and utilize their unique abilities to serve others within the church community. Additionally, it addresses various relationships, including those with God, oneself, the church, enemies, and government. The overarching theme is the transformation of believers' lives through the renewing of their minds, leading to discernment of God's will.

APPLICATION QUESTIONS

  1. Romans 12:2 calls us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. What practical steps can you take to align your thoughts and actions with God’s will rather than conforming to the world?

  2. Paul emphasizes using our spiritual gifts to serve others (vv. 4-8). How can you actively use your gifts to build up the church and help those around you?

  3. Romans 12 encourages us to respond to others with love, even our enemies (vv. 9-21). How can you show Christlike love to someone who is difficult to love?

  4. What does genuine love look like in your interactions with those who may not share your faith?

PRAYER SUGGESTION

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for Your mercy that calls me to live a transformed life. Help me to resist the pressures of this world and renew my mind daily with Your truth. Shape my thoughts, desires, and actions so that they align with Your perfect will.

Lord, You have given me gifts to serve others. Show me how to use them faithfully for Your glory, strengthening the church and encouraging those around me. Give me a heart that seeks to honor You in all that I do.

Teach me to love as You love, even when it is difficult. Let my words and actions reflect Your grace, kindness, and humility, so that I may be a living sacrifice, pleasing to You.

In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Question 2

Paul states that although we are one body, we are also individuals who also have different roles and function. One of my gifts is to serve and serving covers many things. I am to serve the members of my congregation but also those I lead. May I always seek the wisdom and power of God to truly be able to see where there is a need and that I may be able to discern how I may be of help to those who wish to utilize their spiritual gifts. Providing encouragement and guiding without overstepping is something that is always a work in progress. And only through God’s Word and looking at Jesus’s works would I be able…

Q3

A: Christ-like love is very difficult to achieve, but that shouldn’t deter us from trying. I think showing that type of love, one needs to examine his or her heart first. And ask themselves “Am I capable of showing forgiveness and grace to this difficult person?”. If the answer is no, one has to look at what Christ did to us. For us, it’s difficult to love someone that is hard to love, but for Christ he showed his love to us when we were undeserving of it. No matter how much that person might of wronged me, it’s nothing compare to how much I wronged God. So for me, I have to look at my heart and remind…

Question 3

To show Christlike love to someone who is difficult to love is easier said than done. As I look at my life, I definitely lack the capability to be Christlike to those who are difficult to love. I am not at a point where I can show it through my actions because it just seems fake. This is something I must learn to develop and overcome, but as of now I am stuck in my head. I believe that I must overcome this internal struggle that I have with my thoughts in order to have it manifest in my life as actions. I must come to a point where I must accept the fact that Christ loved me…
